Khoi communities take their rightful place in the Provincial House

The KhoiSan clan have finally assumed their rightful place in the Northern Cape House of Traditional Leaders.

The historical event coincided with the Opening of the Northern Cape House of Traditional Leaders, which took place on Wednesday the April 1, 2009 in the Provincial Legislature in Kimberley.

The KhoiSan leaders have been in engagements with the Minister for Provincial and Local Government, Sicelo Shiceka, and the Northern Cape Provincial Government with relation to the inclusion of Khoi people in Government structures.

The decision for both the inclusion of the Khoi into the House of Traditional Leaders as well as the official opening of the House, which is happening for the first time in the Province, was taken earlier this year when Minister Shiceka together with a high powered delegation from the Province and his Department visited the Province.

Khoisan leaders will therefore have provisional representation of eight leaders in the House and this will assist Government in fast-tracking policy generation for the communities concerned.

The eight leaders are made up of the Nama, San, Korrana and the Griekwa which are the main groupings of the KhoiSan.

Minister Shiceka delivered the keynote address at the proceedings.
