Northern Cape Department of Environmental Affairs and Nature Conservation

The Northern Cape Department of Environmental Affairs and Nature Conservation is committed to ensuring the sustainable management of the environment and nature.

Following the 2009 general elections, President Jacob Zuma announced in his cabinet speech that the national Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism, would be divided into the national Department of Tourism and a separate Department of Environmental Affairs and Nature Conservation.

This change was also carried out at a provincial level in the Northern Cape, with the formation of the provincial Department of Finance, Economic Affairs and Tourism and the provincial Department of Environmental Affairs and Nature Conservation, under MEC Sylvia Lucas.

Vision and mission
As the former Department of Tourism, Environment and Conservation, the department's vision was for the Northern Cape to be 'a destination in harmony with nature'. Its mission was 'to promote sustainable development and the management of tourism, conservation and environment'.

Strategic goals
The former Department of Tourism, Environment and Conservation's main aims were to:

  • Promote public awareness and education.
  • Ensure compliance with legislative requirements.
  • Ensure effective biodiversity policy, planning, monitoring and authorisation.
  • Provide a professional impact management service.
  • Ensure effective and efficient rendering of waste and pollution services.
  • Ensure a balance between socioeconomic development and the ecology.
  • Render effective scientific support services for biodiversity management.
  • Ensure sustainable development policies, planning, legislation, coordination, monitoring and reporting.
  • Monitor and evaluate legislation, products and gaps in the tourism-logistics value chain.
  • Provide the political outcome in line with the national and provincial policies.
  • Ensure effective, efficient and transparent management of the department.
  • Develop a competitive and transformed tourism product and service platform.

The vision, mission and strategic goals will inform and continue to underpin the new Department of Environmental Affairs and Nature Conservation's stated vision, mission and strategic goals.
