Mission

The creation of an enabling environment for economic development for the Northern Cape.

Core functions and responsibilities

The department has, in terms of its new programme structure, the following core functions:
• Provide leadership and strategic management in accordance with government legislation, regulations and policies
• Ensure an effective and compliant department that will provide technical support and economic policy advice to the Northern Cape Province
• Promote, support and facilitate integrated economic development through shared partnerships in the province
• Accelerate economic growth by facilitating export from and investment into the Northern Cape while simultaneously promoting economic diversification and industrial expansion
• Regulate business practices and ensure compliance with relevant legislation whilst optimising revenue collection and monitoring departmental agencies
• Support the development of measurable economic policies, strategies or plans informed by relevant economic research so that they are in alignment with the National Spatial Development Perspective, Northern Cape Provincial Growth and Development Strategy and Integrated Development Plans, with the aim of halving unemployment and achieving an average annual economic growth of 4-6% by 2014.
• Manage the development and promotion of the Northern Cape as a competitive tourist destination.
