Mission

Conserve and protect the natural environment for the benefit, enjoyment and welfare of present and future generations by integrating sustainable utilisation with socio-economic development.

Strategic goals

  • Environmental quality and biodiversity management

The department must manage ecosystems, environmental resources, biodiversity and nature reserves in accordance to legislative mandates and policies.

  • Sound corporate service practices

Improved service delivery to the public, other government departments and other spheres of government will be made possible through an enabling conducive work environment.

  • Sustainable economic growth and empowerment opportunities

The Northern Cape has a high incidence of poverty, especially in rural areas and among women and children. To address this, an organized campaign including providing public infrastructure, environmentally sustainable economic development and reversing environmental degradation is necessary.

  • Management of information, operational efficiency and service delivery

The department will work towards improving knowledge and information management so that a culture of operational efficiency and effective service delivery is created.

  • Responsible and accountable department

Sound planning and reporting will ensure that the department offers quality services at the right time for the most suitable recipients, within the confines of allocated funding.

The vision, mission and strategic goals will continue to underpin the Department of Environment and Nature Conservation’s activities for the next five years.
